Genesis 1–3 and Mark 10:45 provide a useful framework for thinking about humanity's purpose: created to reflect God, placed here to serve, and restored through Christ.
God gave Adam a job in the garden; he was instructed to dress it and keep it perfect. He had a perfect workplace, no boss, no time clock, no commute, no Monday morning, and yes, he still managed to get himself fired
It wasn't the job. Adam stopped trusting God's purpose and wanted to do things his way
The fundamental problem of humanity is not that man has no purpose. It's that man pursues purpose apart from God and that is SIN!. The biblical story of redemption is in part restoring man to the purpose for which God created him.
God provided through faith in Him a renewed identity, a restored relationship with God, and meaningful service for a life increasingly brought under God's will.
Remarkable Progression
Man was created to be, do, and obey. Genesis 1:27 indicates that we bear his image to reflect God.
Genesis 2:15 shows us that we are to serve God and cultivate what he has given (By the way, we all have gifts of different kinds with which to serve Him!).
Genesis 3:6 teaches us to trust in and obey God!
So we're made to be God's image bearer, Genesis 1:27 -
So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them. through the word God is trusted to him
God made them to be His.
Genesis 2:15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
God made man to do
in Genesis 36
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
Man Corrupted himself (Satan may have tempted them, but he didn't twist his arm).
So we're created to Be and Do, (not complicated); but the Bible teaches that not only man was corrupted by his sin, but all of creation was twisted because of this sin!
Mark chapter 10 verse 45 shows that man and woman are restored through the work of Christ.
In Mark 10, the disciples were arguing about who was the greatest. Mark 10:45 then says, "whosoever will be great among you, shall be your servant." We're all still trying to get our heads around that one!
Genesis tells us what man was made for. Mark shows us what man was made to look like when that purpose is lived out perfectly Jesus, according to first Corinthians 15:45 is the last Adam. Jesus succeeded where Adam failed! Hallelujah! Out of an evil rebellion Adam sinned and took the human race down a slippery slope, but Jesus, the last Adam, chose obedience, service, sacrifice, and ultimately gave his life for us which (since He was God in the flesh) paid fully for our sins! Now, that will preach!
